Studies show that 1 in 5 Americans already live with a sexually transmitted infection (STI) or disease (STD). Locality, lifestyle choices, identity and sexuality are the four main pillars that determine risk, all important for active adults to understand in order to lead a healthy sexual life.
Some parts of the United States carry higher risks than others, and different areas and metros are at risk for different types of STIs. There are also several behaviors that many people take part in that increase one’s chance of infection. Having unprotected sex, using improper protection, substance abuse, having multiple partners and even using dating apps have been found to increase risk. In fact, although dating app users are nearly 2x more likely to get screened for STIs, they are nearly 1.5x more likely to test positive for them as well. Pieces of our identity, such as our sexuality, ethnicity, age, gender, income, religious beliefs and even education level can make a difference. Overall, gay and bisexual cisgender men test positive the most frequently at 35%.
Abstinence, proper testing, vaccines and protection are some of the most highly recommended methods to prevent the spread. Especially if one is active or planning to become active, it is important to understand these methods to keep oneself and others safe.
